Blunt chest (thoracic) injuries are the primary or a contributing cause of about a quarter of all trauma-related deaths. The mortality rate is about 10%. Chest injuries were first described in detail in around 1600 BC in the ancient Egyptian Edwin Smith Papyrus.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Classification: <\/strong>Chest trauma can be classified generally as blunt or penetrating, having different patho-physiological features and clinical courses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Specific types of chest trauma include:<br \/>\n\u2022\t<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Injuries to the chest wall<\/span><br \/>\no\tChest wall contusions or hematomas.<br \/>\no\tRib fractures<br \/>\no\tFlail chest<br \/>\no\tSternal fractures<br \/>\no\tFractures of the clavicle and shoulder girdle<br \/>\n\u2022\t<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pulmonary injury (injury to the lung) &amp; injuries involving the pleural space<\/span><br \/>\no\tPulmonary contusion<br \/>\no\tPulmonary laceration<br \/>\no\tPneumothorax<br \/>\no\tHaemothorax<br \/>\no\tHaemopneumothorax<br \/>\n\u2022<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Injury to the airways<\/span><br \/>\no\tTracheobronchial tear<br \/>\n\u2022\tCardiac injury<br \/>\no\tPericardial tamponade<br \/>\no\tMyocardial contusion<br \/>\n\u2022\t<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Blood vessel injuries<\/span><br \/>\no\tTraumatic aortic rupture, thoracic aorta injury<br \/>\n\u2022\t<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Injuries to other structures within the torso<\/span><br \/>\no\tOesophageal injury (Boerhaave syndrome)<br \/>\no\tThe Diaphragm injury<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong><br \/>\nMost blunt injuries are managed with relatively simple interventions like intubation and mechanical ventilation and chest tube insertion. Diagnosis of blunt injuries may be more difficult and require additional investigations such as CT scanning. Penetrating injuries often require surgery, and complex investigations are usually not needed to come to a diagnosis.
